Do You Really Need a Florida Tax Move in 2026? Here's the Truth

If you’re reading this from a chilly apartment in Manhattan or a drafty house in Westchester, you’ve probably had "the talk" with yourself. You know the one. It usually happens right after you look at your pay stub and realize that between New York State and New York City, a massive chunk of your hard-earned money is disappearing before you even have a chance to spend it.

By now, it’s March 2026. The winter is starting to break, but the tax bill reality is just setting in. You’ve heard the rumors about the "Florida Pay Raise," and you’re wondering: Is it actually worth it? Or is it just hype?

At Michael Patrick Dugan PA, we help New Yorkers make this transition every single day. We don’t just sell houses; we help people relocate their lives. So, let’s get into the "no-nonsense" truth about making a tax move to the Sunshine State in 2026.

The "Florida Pay Raise" is Real (And It’s Massive)

Let’s start with the big one: Zero percent. That is exactly how much Florida charges you in state income tax.

In New York, depending on your bracket, you could be losing anywhere from 4% to nearly 11% of your income to the state. If you live in NYC, tack on another 3% to 4%. When you move to Florida, that money stays in your pocket. We call this the "Florida Pay Raise."

Think about it this way: If you’re a household earning $200,000 a year, moving from Brooklyn to Boca Raton could effectively give you a $15,000 to $20,000 raise overnight. That’s not a small change. That’s a new car payment, a college fund contribution, or, better yet, a much bigger mortgage budget for a house with a pool.

Move From Great… To Glorious!

What Just Happened in Tallahassee? (The March 2026 Update)

We just hit a major milestone for Florida taxpayers. The regular legislative session wrapped up on March 13, 2026. This is important because it sets the stage for what your taxes will look like if you buy a home here later this year or in 2027.

There are some big proposals that might land on your ballot this November. If they pass, the tax benefits of living here are going to get even sweeter starting January 1, 2027. Here is what we are watching:

  1. HJR 205 (The Senior Break): This proposal aims to eliminate non-school property taxes for seniors aged 65 and older. If you’re looking at places like Boynton Beach or Delray Beach for retirement, this could save you thousands every year.

  2. HJR 209 (The Insurance Exemption): This would provide an additional $200,000 homestead exemption for insured homes. With insurance being a hot topic in Florida, this is the state’s way of putting money back in your pocket to offset those costs.

  3. HJR 211 (Portability Power): Right now, there’s a $500,000 cap on how much "Save Our Homes" tax savings you can move from one house to another. This proposal would remove that cap for non-school taxes, making it much easier to upgrade your home later on without a giant tax hit.

Even if these don't pass, the current tax structure is already miles ahead of what you're dealing with up North.

Why 2026 is the Strategic Year to Move

Why move now instead of waiting for 2027? It’s all about timing your "domicile."

To truly break up with the New York Department of Taxation and Finance, you need to prove you live in Florida. This means getting your Florida driver's license, registering to vote here, and, most importantly, spending more than 183 days in the state.

By starting your move now in the spring of 2026, you can establish your residency firmly before the end of the year. This protects your 2026 income and sets you up perfectly for the potential new tax breaks hitting in 2027.

Let’s Talk Lifestyle: Where Should You Land?

When New Yorkers call Michael Patrick Dugan PA, they usually have a specific vibe in mind. Florida isn't just one big beach; every city has its own personality. Here’s a quick guide to our primary service areas:

  • Boca Raton: If you want "New York luxury" with palm trees, this is it. Great schools, high-end shopping at Town Center, and a very familiar feel for anyone coming from the Upper East Side or Long Island.

  • Boynton Beach: This is the capital of 55+ active adult communities. If you’re ready to trade the snow shovel for a pickleball paddle, Boynton offers some of the best lifestyle-to-value ratios in the state.

  • Ft. Lauderdale: Known as the "Venice of America," it’s perfect for boaters and those who want a more urban, vibrant nightlife.

  • Delray Beach: The "village by the sea." It’s got a famous Atlantic Avenue filled with restaurants and boutiques. It’s trendy, social, and very walkable.

  • Pompano Beach & Deerfield Beach: These areas are seeing massive redevelopment. They are great spots to find beachfront value before the prices catch up to their southern neighbors.

  • Lake Worth: For a more artsy, laid-back, and eclectic vibe, Lake Worth is a hidden gem that New Yorkers are starting to flood into.

The Truth About the "Hidden" Costs

I promised you the truth, so let’s be real: Florida isn't "free." While you save a fortune on income tax, you do have to account for things like homeowners insurance and higher auto insurance rates.

However, when you do the math, subtracting the New York state income tax, the New York City tax, the astronomical heating bills, and the high cost of... well, everything in NY, most of our clients find they are still coming out significantly ahead. We call it "trading a tax bill for a lifestyle upgrade."
